Gutter guards still need attention

What guards stop and what slips through

Screens, perforated covers and reverse-curve hoods all work on the same idea: let water in, keep leaves out. They handle a live oak's leaf drop better than an open trough. What they handle less well is the fine layer that settles on top of them in pollen season, and the granules that wash off asphalt shingles as the roof ages.

Over a year or two that residue can form a skin across the guard. Water then sheets past the opening during a hard storm instead of dropping in. It is easy to miss, because the guard looks tidy from below while the run behind it is slowly filling with what did get through.

Signs the guards need a clean

• Water spilling over the front edge during a downpour, even though the guard is installed.
• Green growth or a dark crust visible along the top surface.
• Sprouting seedlings in the gutter line, which means soil has formed.
• Stains on the fascia or siding below a particular stretch.

Any of these suggests the guard or the trough beneath it is partly blocked. Cleaning may require lifting the guard sections, which some systems make easy and others make awkward.

Questions to settle before a visit

Not every guard type lifts the same way, and removing certain styles can conflict with the manufacturer's terms for the product. If you know who installed yours, or have any paperwork, mention it when you request a quote so we can plan for it.

If the home is in a homeowners association, the guard colour and style may already have been reviewed. Florida's HOA statute, section 720.3035, limits how an association may deny an architectural request, but swapping or cleaning guards generally leaves the appearance as it was.
